Corrections Officer – Job Description

Supervisor: The Director, Assistant Director, Case Managers, and the Corrections Officers Supervisor

Status: Full Time / Salaried

Work Hours: Officers work a 12-hour, rotating shift

Qualifications:   

The Corrections Officer must meet or exceed the following qualifications:

  1. Must have graduated from High School or have a GED, a 2-year degree is preferred
  2. Must be 21 years of age
  3. Must have a valid driver’s license
  4. Must be of good moral character
  5. Must possess good oral and written communication skills
  6. Must have some clerical skills
  7. Must be able to work with a diverse group of people
  8. Must have a working knowledge of community resources
  9. Must be able to deal amicably with the Judges, Prosecutors, Defense Attorneys, and co-workers

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Corrections Officer include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Work towards officers compliance with Evidence Based Practice Policy and Guidelines
  2. Work with case management to aid officers with compliance in the Quality Assurance Program
  3. Work with the officers to comply with case and treatment plans
  4. Offer positive reinforcement to offenders whenever possible
  5. Corrections Officers shall report directly to the Correctional Officer Supervisor
  6. Officers will answer the telephone and distribute incoming messages for staff
  7. Answer intercom calls (intake and lobby doors) and make announcements to offenders as required
  8. Officers will be responsible for the operation of all electronic doors.
  9. Officer will also be responsible for activating the Emergency Unlock in the event of a fire.
  10. Officers may use base 2 way radios to communicate with staff and other agencies as needed
  11. Maintain the Shift Log Report.
  12. Maintain the offender count and maintains offender movement on the Magnetic Count Board
  13. Officers shall assist in the searches of offenders entering the building
  14. Officers shall make available offender medications and fills out the medication log
  15. Officers shall ensure offenders have fulfilled cleaning duties as posted in dayroom
  16. Monitors and assists anyone who approaches the control room window
  17. Officers shall be required to perform daily cleaning of the control room
  18. Monitors the video monitoring system in order to track offender movements in the facility
  19. Officers perform random patrols/security checks of all areas of the facility
  20. Perform checks of the bunk and restroom areas and make note of violations
  21. Sell commissary items at the designated time
  22. Administer PBT (Portable Breath Tests) and drug tests as directed
  23. Conducts events as indicated during the daily operations of the facility
  24. Officers do home and business checks of participants as assigned (Field Officer Duty)
  25. Cover planned and unplanned days off for other officers (Field Officer Duty)
  26. Performs other assignments as directed by the Director, Assistant Director, and Corrections Officer Supervisor

Director – Job Description

Supervisor:  Dubois County Community Corrections Advisory Board

Status: Full Time / Compensatory Time Exempt / Salaried

Work Hours: Monday through Friday and is available for call out

Qualifications:

The Director must meet or exceed the following requirements:

  1. Must have a High School or G.E.D. diploma a four year degree is preferred for this position
  2. Must be 21 years of age
  3. Must have administrative and supervisory skills
  4. Must have experience developing fiscal budgets
  5. Must have a valid driver’s license
  6. Must be of good moral character
  7. Must possess good oral and written communication skills
  8. Must have some clerical skills
  9. Must be able to work with diverse groups of people
  10. Must be able to deal amicably with the Judges, Prosecutors, Attorneys, and co-workers

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Community Corrections Director include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Management and direct all Community Corrections Staff
  2. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Corrections Center
  3. Establishes policies and procedures for the employees and the facility
  4. Establishment and maintain of Community Corrections financial and participant records
  5. Preparation of grants for submission to the Indiana Department of Correction
  6. Compile reports for the Department of Correction on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis
  7. Establish and monitoring of Evidence Based Practice Policy and Guidelines
  8. Establish and monitoring the Quality Assurance Program to insure proper case management
  9. Monitors the risk/needs evaluations for offenders for quality control
  10. Monitors the Treatment Programs Facilitator and facilitation of programs
  11. Gives positive reinforcement to offenders whenever possible and follows program guidelines
  12. Testify in Court when needed
  13. Act as a liaison between Community Corrections and the Courts
  14. Perform evaluations on Community Corrections staff
  15. Communicate effectively with all Community Corrections Staff and Offenders
  16. Any other job or responsibility needed to operate the Corrections Center or as indicated by the Dubois County Community Corrections Advisory Board
